Rhymefest Releases “I AM” Featuring Common, D Lylez, and Reverend Jesse Jackson

Chicago hip-hop artist and Grammy-winning songwriter Rhymefest has released a powerful new record titled “I AM,” bringing together a multigenerational collaboration that blends hip-hop, activism, and history.

The song features Chicago rap icon Common, rising artist D Lylez, and civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, who delivers a powerful spoken-word performance inspired by his historic “I Am Somebody” message. The phrase became widely known through Jackson’s motivational speeches and educational programs encouraging empowerment and self-worth.

The track brings Jackson’s legendary words into a modern hip-hop setting, merging civil rights history with contemporary music. Known for his socially conscious songwriting and cultural activism, Rhymefest, born Che Smith, has built a career connecting music with community impact, including award-winning songwriting and leadership in cultural organizations.

Behind the music is Washington, D.C. producer Tone P, who produced the track and helped shape its musical direction.

The collaboration reflects a broader creative bridge between Chicago and Washington, D.C., blending soulful hip-hop production with a message rooted in empowerment, identity, and legacy.

The record originated from studio sessions held at Donda House, the historic Chicago home turned creative hub where artists and community leaders have gathered to create music with purpose. During those sessions, Reverend Jesse Jackson recorded new vocals reimagining the spirit of his famous speech, giving the song a powerful generational connection.

“I AM” stands as both a musical statement and a cultural reminder, linking past movements for empowerment with today’s creative voices.

The release marks a significant moment in the ongoing collaboration between Rhymefest and Tone P, highlighting how hip-hop can continue to serve as a platform for history, culture, and social consciousness.
