Tone P
Tone P, a proud native of Southwest Washington, D.C., stands at the forefront of a cultural renaissance and a true architect shaping the past, present, and future of Go-Go music. While widely respected for his contributions to hip-hop, Tone’s deeper legacy lies in his mission to amplify and evolve D.C.’s indigenous sound through innovation, advocacy, and artistic excellence.
Grammy nominated multi-platinum music producer and RIAA Gold Artist, Tone P is best known for fusing the raw pulse of Go-Go into mainstream music. His signature production helped power Wale’s rise, most notably through his platinum-certified contributions to the Ambition album, including co-writing the memorable hook on the title track featuring Meek Mill and Rick Ross. Tone also produced and performed the hook for Wale’s street anthem “Bait,” which paid direct homage to the Go-Go classic by TCB, proving that the boune beat could move crowds well beyond the DMV featuring himself performing the hook.
But Tone P’s work doesn’t stop at the beat, it extends to policy, preservation, and progression. As an original co-founder of the Don’t Mute D.C. movement in 2019 alongside Ronald Moten, Natalie Hopkinson, and Tony Lewis Jr., Tone played a vital role in the successful campaign to make Go-Go the official music of Washington, D.C. That victory was more than symbolic, it was a rallying cry for cultural ownership.
In 2025, Tone P founded GOGO Global, a nonprofit organization committed to preserving and expanding the reach of Go-Go music and D.C. culture worldwide. That same year, he co-founded the organization’s first major initiative: National Mambo Sauce Day, a powerful cultural platform designed to celebrate the flavor, rhythm, and spirit of Washington, D.C. by uniting local businesses, artists, and communities under one banner.
Now signed to Universal Music Publishing and CEO of District Funk Records, Tone continues to champion D.C.’s sound across industries. In 2022, he formed his genre-defying band Tone P & Tha Carry Out, launching GOGOPUNK, a bold fusion of Go-Go’s percussion driven soul and the raw, unfiltered energy of punk rock. As lead vocalist, he is pushing the genre into uncharted sonic territory, carrying the pocket from the block to the global stage.
From the studio to city hall, from street anthems to cultural holidays, Tone P is more than a producer, he’s a movement. A cultural architect building the bridge between tradition and transformation, ensuring Go-Go lives louder than ever before.
